Parent 'Need to know' before a shoot
Newborn suggestions
- Mothers who are nursing should try to avoid eating anything spicy (i.e., pizza, hot sauce, etc.) that might upset the baby’s tummy for 24 hours preceding the scheduled session.
- Please try to keep your baby awake for 1 to 2 hours before the session to ensure he or she is sleepy for the shoot. This is very important: without this, too much time will be spent getting them to sleep and there won’t be as much time for photographing them.
- Try to make sure baby has a full tummy for the session. Parents should feed their baby immediately before the session time and give them a good wind, so they can be as settled as possible.
- Dress the baby in loose clothes to avoid any lines on their skin – a simple sleeper is best. Avoid “onesies” or anything else that must be pulled off over the baby’s head.
- Have a dummy or soother available. Some parents do not like these but they can be very helpful for a short time during the session to soothe baby back to sleep so we can achieve them all important relaxed baby photos.
- The house will be kept at around 85 degrees fahrenheit to keep the baby warm while in their birthday suit. A cooler temperature can wake baby and make them a little harder to pose as they are not in a comfortable deep sleep. Please dress for this temp and bring any drinks, snacks etc to sustain you for the shoot.
- During the session, please relax and take advantage of this time to rest. If I need help I will ask. Sometimes the shoot can run up to 4 hours long giving you the perfect few hours to put your feet up with a cuppa or simply take that well needed nap :)
- Once you arrive and settled, I wash my hands and hold baby for a few minutes so they can get use to my scent and feel comfortable being handled by myself.
- We can go through a variety of props, blankets, styles etc and choose the ones you like best.
- The shoot can last anywhere between 30 minuets - 4 hours depending on what package is chosen and how baby is on the day. Most of that time will not be spent taking photos but changing set ups, soothing baby and settling them in the next pose.
- Parents should let me know ahead of time if they would like family or sibling portraits taken during the newborn session. After sibling portraits are finished, I ask the spouse to take the older sibling out/home for the remainder of the session. Having antsy toddlers in the room can make it difficult to finish up the individual newborn portraits.
- Please be aware of the outfits you are choosing if you are having family or sibling portraits. Make sure the colours are simple, not clashing spots and strips. A uniform 'all white, or all black' tends to work best. Obviously this isn't to everyones tastes and I will be happy to shoot with what ever you choose.
- Have a look online or at my newborn gallery for shooting styles and poses you like, so you have a good idea of what you would like from the final product and let me know before I start shooting. This ensures we are on the same page.
